Huskies Downed on Final Night in Alexandria

August 9, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies finished up their fourth straight game against the Alexandria Beetles in Alexandria, Minnesota on Saturday night just one day after Huskies newcomer Justin Saufley shut down the Beetles offense with a complete game win.  On this night, however, the Beetles proved to be too much for the visiting Huskies as they downed Duluth by the score of 9-3.

The Huskies sent another University of Wisconsin-Superior pitcher to the mound to see if he too could keep the Beetles bats off balance, but unfortunately for starting pitcher Tim Bouvine that wouldn't be the case as he was touched for nine runs, all earned, over seven innings of work while allowing 14 hits and walking one while striking out five.  Bouvine gave way to outfielder Ty Main (pictured left) who worked a perfect eighth inning to finish the game.

At the plate the Huskies were able to force across three runs on eight hits including three of the bat of right fielder Collin Kuhn (pictured right). First baseman Tim Jobe and left fielder Todd Baumgartner each scored a run and had a RBI for the Huskies cause.

Duluth will now travel north of the border to face off against the North Division leading Thunder Bay Border Cats in a pair of games on Sunday and Monday night to wrap up the 2008 Northwoods League season.

Saufley Shuts Down Beetles

August 8, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies played their third straight game in Alexandria on Friday night and looked to jump back into the win column after a couple of tough losses to the host Beetles.  Duluth looked to University of Wisconsin-Superior pitcher Justin Saufley to lead the way, and he did just that.  Saufley threw a complete game allowing only two runs on eleven Beetles hits while walking three and striking out three en route to running his record to 3-0 on the season as the Huskies won 6-2.

The Huskies offense came from 2008 Northwoods League All-Star and MVP Candidate Tim Jobe (pictured left) who knocked in three runs and scored a run while second baseman Robby Price, from Kansas University, went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI.  Another 2008 Northwoods League All-Star, Chris House, also had two hits for the Huskies winning cause.

Duluth will stay in Alexandria and face the Beetles one more time on Saturday at 6:05 PM before heading north of the border to face the Thunder Bay Border Cats who are in the thick of the Northwoods League North Division Playoff Race.

Huskies Fall Again in Alexandria

August 7, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies continued their season ending road trip on Thursday night in Alexandria for the second of four games against the Alexandria Beetles.  Just one night after getting narrowly clipped in 10 innings by the Beetles the same two teams battled it out, only this time the Beetles were able to come out on top within the regulation nine innings, defeating Duluth by the score of 4-1.

The Huskies sent big left handed starting pitcher Andy Hamilton (pictured left) to the mound in search of his fourth win, and Hamilton pitched well for Duluth going 6 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits while walking four and striking out two, but left with Duluth trailing by the score of 2-1.  University of Minnesota-Duluth pitcher Gary Wilfahrt Jr. then took the hill for the final two innings and allowed two unearned runs on one hit as Alexandria held on for the win.

At the plate the Huskies were only able to muster five hits that were once again scattered between five different players.  Chris House, Collin Kuhn, Todd Baumgartner, Andy Burns and Tyler Erickson had the hits for Duluth with Erickson scoring the Huskies lone run in the third inning.

The Huskies will take on the Beetles once again on Friday night in Alexandria starting at 6:05 PM when they will send University of Wisconsin-Superior pitcher Justin Saufley to the mound for his first start of the season.

Beetles Drop Huskies in Ten

August 6, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies hit the road on Wednesday to start the season ending six game road trip in Alexandria, Minnesota.  The Huskies entered the contest coming off of a win over the first place Thunder Bay Border Cats in the home finale on Tuesday.  Unfortunately for Duluth, a late rally was spoiled by the host Alexandria Beetles as the Huskies fell 6-5 in 10 innings.

Duluth looked to continue their momentum by sending University of Minnesota-Duluth pitcher Josh Foreman (pictured left) to the mound for the start against the Beetles in Alexandria.  Foreman was given a 1-0 after Duluth scored in the top of the first inning, but Alexandria was able to jump into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first.  The Huskies were then able to take the lead again in the top of the fifth with three runs that made the score 4-3 in favor of Duluth, but again Alexandria pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning regaining the lead.  The Huskies then tied the game with a ninth inning rally knotting the score at 5-5, before Alexandria pushed across the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th handing Duluth the loss.

For the game, Foreman threw 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.  Foreman was then relieved by Sam Murphy who worked the next 4 2/3 innings without allowing a run on two hits while walking one and striking out three.  Robbie Wort took the loss after working 1/3 of an inning allowing one run on no hits while walking three and striking out one.

At the plate the Huskies managed to score five runs on only five hits, by five different players.  Outfielder Chris House (pictured right) went 1 for 2 with a RBI and a two runs scored while Robby Price picked up a RBI and designated hitter Tyler Steen had a hit and scored a run.

The Huskies and Beetles will face off once again on Thursday night in Alexandria when Duluth will send Rice University left hander Andy Hamilton (3-0) to the mound.  Game time in Alexandria is 6:05 PM.

The Huskies sent starting pitcher Matt Hauser (pictured left) to the mound on "Nine Innings of Winning" Fan Appreciation Night presented by Charter Communications and Hauser was able to battle to the win as he exited the game with Duluth holding an 8-5 lead over the Border Cats.  Thunder was able to get on the board first with solo runs in each of the first two innings, before Duluth put up five runs taking their first lead of the series.  The Border Cats then battled back against Hauser tying it at five before the big bat of Todd Baumgartner (pictured right) untied the game with a long blast to deep left field that brought home Chris House and Tim Jobe giving Duluth the 8-5 lead.  Thunder Bay was able to scratch out two more runs before Jobe took the mound in the ninth to close the door on the Huskies victory.

Late Inning Rally Leaves Huskies Short

August 4, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies returned to the field on Monday after enjoying a day off on Sunday as the Thunder Bay Border Cats came to town putting the Huskies right in the thick of the 2008 North Division Playoff Race.  Unfortunately for Duluth on this night the Huskies fell behind early and were unable to battle back despite a ninth inning rally that ended three runs short as the Border Cats took the game by the score of 8-5.

The Huskies fell behind 3-0 right away in the first inning off of starting pitcher Tim Statz, but they were able to tack on two of their own in the bottom of the inning when Tim Jobe (pictured left), who came into the game leading the Northwoods League in hitting and who is already the Huskies single season and career home run leader, launched a two run home run to deep left field, his eighth of the season, that brought home fellow 2008 Northwoods League All-Star Chris House.  The Huskies offense was then stalled for much of the game as they were not able to push across another run until the bottom of the ninth inning when they scored three narrowing the score to 8-5.

The Huskies will face off against the Border Cats again on Tuesday night in the final regular season home game of the 2008 season when the Huskies and Charter Communications will present "Nine Innings of Winning" on Fan Appreciation Night followed by a fireworks extravaganza!  Fans will have the opportunity to win an assortment of great prizes including gas certificates from Interstate Spur, $100 in cash, two round trip tickets to Las Vegas courtesy of Sunsational Travel and Allegiant Air, and a 47" LCD HDTV!  It's also a two dollar Tuesday which means fans will receive $2.00 off of all General Admission tickets!  On the field the Huskies will sent Matt Hauser (pictured right) to the mound for another start as Duluth looks to throw a kink into Thunder Bay's playoff plans.  Gates open at 6:05 PM on Tuesday.

Huskies Take it to the House in Extras

August 2, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies and the Brainerd Blue Thunder met for the third game in two days on Saturday night at Wade Stadium in Duluth just one day after the two teams split a doubleheader on Friday night and Duluth managed to squeak out ahead taking the final game by the score of 7-6 in 10 innings in front of 1,579 fans at the Wade on the last Sunsational Saturday of the 2008 season.

The story of the Huskies on the mound was newcomer Justin Saufley from the University of Wisconsin-Superior who worked in relief masterfully en route to claiming his first win in his first appearance in the Northwoods League.

At the plate the Huskies managed to force across the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning when, after two quick outs, Chris House (pictured left) walked before stealing second base putting himself in scoring position with Robby Price at the plate.  Price was able to smack the ball through the Blue Thunder infield with House running on contact as the speedy Georgia Tech outfielder beat the throw bringing this day of baseball to a close.

The Huskies will enjoy a day off on Sunday before wrapping up the home portion of their 2008 regular season schedule when the Thunder Bay Border Cats come to town for a pair of games on Monday and Tuesday night at Wade Stadium in Duluth on the final Upper Lakes Foods Dollar Dog Night of the season when hot dogs will be just $1.00 in the Brickyard Grill and the Shortstop concession stands located in the main concourse of the Wade.  Gates open both Monday and Tuesday at 6:05 PM.

Jobe Leads Way to Huskies Split

August 1, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies welcomed the Brainerd Blue Thunder to town on Friday night in Duluth for a doubleheader with two seven inning games scheduled to start at 5:05 PM.  Both teams ended up getting more than they had bargained for and both walked away with a win as the two teams split the doubleheader with Brainerd taking game one by the score of 7-5 in eight innings before the Huskies secured the split by pounding out a 15-12 victory at Wade Stadium.

The Huskies sent Andy Hamilton (pictured left) to the mound for the start in game one and the Huskies and Blue Thunder went back and forth with the Huskies tying the game in the bottom of the seventh before Brainerd scored three runs in the top of the eighth.  The Huskies were able to muster one run in a comeback effort, but it would prove to be futile as the Blue Thunder won by the score of 7-5.

The same two teams then got game two underway and it would prove to be a strong offensive showing for Duluth as they scored 15 runs in the seven innings including three homeruns by the home team as Tim Jobe (pictured right), Todd Baumgartner, and Chris House each connected for a big fly and Jobe let the way going 3 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored while also drawing a walk as the Huskies were able to push across more runs than their counterparts from Brainerd winning game two by the score of 15-12 as Huskies outfielder Ty Main collected the win in relief, his first win of the season.

The Huskies and Blue Thunder will be back at it again on Saturday in more traditional fashion as they face off at 7:05 PM for one nine inning contest at Wade Stadium in Duluth.  It's the make up of the Minnesota Forest Industries and Minnesota Timber Producers Mini Bat Night when the Huskies will be handing out the remaining mini bats left from the July 19th rain out, plus the Duluth News Tribune will be giving away the Polaris Predator ATV that has been on display at Wade Stadium all summer long, plus one lucky fan will win a round trip ticket to Las Vegas on Allegiant Air courtesy of Sunsational Travel!  All of this is coming your way if you just make it to the Wade on Saturday!  Gates open at 6:05 PM.

River Bats Silence the Huskies

July 31, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies and the St. Cloud River Bats faced off in the second game of the scheduled two game series on Thursday night at Wade Stadium in Duluth with the Huskies entering the game on a three-game winning streak tying the longest streak of the season for Duluth.  The Huskies had planned to extend that streak to four, but the streak would come to an end as St. Cloud defeated the Huskies by the score of 7-1.

The Huskies sent University of Minnesota-Duluth pitcher Josh Foreman ( pictured left) to the mound needing to save the bullpen with an already depleted roster and a doubleheader looming on Friday and Foreman did just that throwing eight innings allowing seven runs on 13 hits while walking four and striking out two.  Foreman threw well for much of the game running into a tough patch in the third inning when the River Bats put up four runs.  Ty Main made his first appearance on the mound of the season pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one St. Cloud batter.

The Huskies offense knocked out seven hits on the night but were unable to push across a run until the bottom of the ninth inning when Todd Baumgartner started the inning with a double to deep left center field before Tim Jobe (pictured right) crushed a ball deep off the wall in left field driving Baumgartner home with the teams lone run.

The Huskies will be back on the field on Friday starting at 5:05 PM when the Brainerd Blue Thunder come to town for a doubleheader on Famous Dave's Blues and BBQ Night presented by Famous Dave's of Canal Park.  The Huskies will send Rice University pitcher Andy Hamilton to the mound in the first game of the doubleheader on Friday as the Huskies and Blue Thunder will eventually play two seven inning contests.  Gates open at 4:05 PM.

Huskies Beat Up River Bats

July 30, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies offense seemed to keep their hitting shoes on just one day after defeating the Rochester Honkers by the score of 12-9 on Tuesday when they arrived back home at Wade Stadium, only this time it was the St. Cloud River Bats who were on the brunt end of the Huskies newfound offense as they put up six runs in the bottom of the first demolishing an early 1-0 lead for St. Cloud as the Huskies and starting pitcher Matt Hauser (pictured left) cruised from that point to a 7-3 victory in front of 1,272 fans at the Wade in Duluth.

Hauser made the most of the early lead as he picked up his first victory of the season after working 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three before giving way to University of Minnesota-Duluth reliever Gary Wilfahrt Jr. who worked the next 1 2/3 innings without allowing a run and giving up only two hits.  Robbie Wort then took to the mound looking to close out the third straight win for Duluth and he did just that tossing a perfect ninth inning without allowing a single base runner and striking out one River Bats batter.

The story of the Huskies offense on this night was how Duluth was able to make the most of the River Bats struggles on the mound in the first inning as they scored six runs in that inning on only two hits, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Andy Burns (pictured right), and eventually brought that total to seven on only eight hits for the game.

The Huskies and River Bats will go at it once again on Thursday night at Wade Stadium in Duluth starting at 7:05 PM on "Fight Back Against Cancer Night" with the American Cancer Society and it's a Halloween Night Celebration so wear your best costume to win amazing prizes and to have a ghoulish good time.  It's also our last Thirsty Thursday of the year as fans can enjoy 1/2 price beer and fountain soda all night long!  Gates open at 6:05 PM on Thursday.

July 29, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies faced off against the Rochester Honkers in the second game of the scheduled two game series on Tuesday in Rochester looking to complete the series sweep of the North Division rivals.  The Huskies were able to jump out early and then kept building their lead as they eventually held on for the 12-9 win and sweep over the Honkers.

The Huskies sent starting pitcher Tim Statz (pictured left) to the mound and gave him a solid 4-0 lead before he even took the hill in the bottom of the first inning.  Statz eventually left the game following the fifth inning with the Huskies leading 6-5 with Statz allowing the five runs, four of them being earned, on six hits while walking five and striking out five en route to picking up his fourth win of the season.  Statz then gave way to Sam Murphy who cruised through two innings before running into trouble after starting the eighth inning.  Murphy then gave way to Tim Jobe after going two innings of work allowing four runs, all earned, on one hit while walking five and striking out three.  Jobe worked out of the eighth inning jam before starting the ninth and recording one out before Huskies closer Mitch Mormann came in and closed the door on the Honkers potential rally, clinching the sweep and the 12-9 Huskies win.

At the plate the Huskies had a big day as they pushed across 12 runs on 14 hits paced by Jobe who had three hits, one RBI and scored two runs.  Catcher Steve Chatwood, from the University of San Diego, when 2 for 5 with one RBI and scored three runs while Chris House, Taylor Krick, Thomas Nichols, and Andy Burns (pictured right) all had two hits and two RBIs for the Huskies winning cause.

Duluth Edges Rochester for Win

July 28, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies traveled to Rochester, Minnesota on Monday for a pair of games against North Division rival, the Rochester Honkers, on Monday and Tuesday night at Mayo Field.  The Huskies were looking to bounce back after being swept at home by the Mankato MoonDogs and looked to starting pitcher Matt Benedict (pictured left) to help them do just that.  Benedict did just what he needed to do and the Huskies bullpen did the rest securing a 3-2 Huskies win over the Honkers.

Benedict allowed only two hits over 5 2/3 innings of work while allowing two earned runs with seven walks en route to earning his first win of the season.  University of Minnesota-Duluth pitcher Gary Wilfahrt Jr. then came in and worked brilliantly for the next 2 2/3 innings holding the Huskies 3-2 lead while allowing only two hits and walking one while striking out two.  Robbie Wort then came in with one out in the ninth inning and a runner on first but secured the Huskies win with 2/3 of shutout ball without allowing a single hit or walking a single batter and striking out two for his first save of the year.

The Huskies offense scored three runs on six hits by six different players with Chris House (pictured right) , Robby Price, and Todd Baumgartner picking up the RBIs in the Huskies win.  House, Taylor Krick, and Thomas Nichols scored the runs for Duluth in the win.

The Huskies will face the Honkers again on Tuesday night in Rochester when Duluth will send Tim Statz and his 3-1 record to the mound at Mayo Field before returning to the Wade for a six game homestand starting on Wednesday night when the St. Cloud River Bats come to Duluth for an Arby's Roast Beef Wednesday when the first 500 fans through the gates will receive a coupon for a free roast beef sandwich from Arby's in Duluth.  Gates will open on Wednesday at 6:05 PM.

Huskies End Up on Bottom of Teeter-Totter

July 27, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies paid tribute to the history of baseball in Duluth on Sunday afternoon at Wade Stadium honoring the 60th anniversary of the tragic 1948 Duluth Dukes bus crash that killed four players and team manager George Treadwell, who later had the Northern League Manager of the Year Award renamed after him after his death.  The Huskies also paid remembered the 10th anniversary of Duluth-Superior Dukes pitcher Ila Borders who became the first female to win a game in professional baseball when she defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries at Wade Stadium in Duluth on July 24th, 1998.  Also, the Huskies handed out pictures featuring former Duluth players who advanced all the way to the Major Leagues including former Duluth Huskies Joe Bisenius and Doug Mathis (pictured left) courtesy of Stewart Taylor Printing and Imagetech.

Unfortunately for the Huskies Sunday afternoon after eight solid innings the tight knit game for Duluth unraveled as Mankato pushed across seven runs in the top of the ninth erasing a 5-4 Duluth lead and leaving the Huskies with a 11-5 defeat in front of 1,348 fans at Wade Stadium.

Grant Muncrief, (pictured right) from Wichita State University got the start for Duluth on Sunday and was able to come up with the big outs when it counted despite getting hit around a little early in the contest.  Muncrief gave way to Sam Murphy who threw well and got the Huskies out of a tough jam right away and was eventually en route to becoming the winning pitcher for the Huskies as Duluth held a lead heading into the eighth inning.  Tim Jobe (pictured lower left) them came in to pitch and after allowing a hit and walking a batter was replaced by Mitch MormannMormann did not have his normal bullseye control on this day as he walked the game tying run before escaping the inning.  That set things up for Chris House to come through with a huge RBI single in bottom of the eighth giving the Huskies the 5-4 lead and things were looking up heading into the ninth.  Mormann stayed out for the ninth and after the first two batters reached he was replaced by infielder Robby Price on the mound.  Price had trouble finding the zone as well and the MoonDog bats awoke as they eventually pushed across seven runs in the inning before Andy Hamilton came in to finish the inning for Duluth.  Jobe also added three hits to the Huskies offensive cause.

The Huskies will now take their show on the road for two days as they will head to Rochester, Minnesota to take on the Rochester Honkers in a pair of games on Monday and Tuesday before returning to the Wade for a six game homestand starting on Wednesday night when the St. Cloud River Bats come to Duluth for an Arby's Roast Beef Wednesday when the first 500 fans through the gates will receive a coupon for a free roast beef sandwich from Arby's in Duluth.  Gates will open on Wednesday at 6:05 PM.

MoonDogs Spoil Huskies Homecoming

July 26, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies returned to Wade Stadium in West Duluth, Minnesota on Saturday night following the longest, in distance, road trip of the season.  The road weary Huskies arrived in Duluth early Saturday morning with a pair of games against the North Division's First Half Champion Mankato MoonDogs ahead of them on Saturday and Sunday.  The Huskies fans were out in full force, however, on Saturday doing their best to wake the Huskies up as 4,203 came out, the second highest attendance in Duluth Huskies history.  Unfortunately it wasn't quite enough as the MoonDogs were able to capitalize on their openings while Duluth couldn't mount enough big hits eventually falling by the score of 3-1.

The Huskies sent University of Kansas pitcher T.J. Walz to the mound for the start.  Walz entered the game second in the Northwoods League in strikeouts but Mankato was able to squeeze out just enough off of Walz, pushing across three before Walz gave way to Gary Wilfahrt Jr. from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Jefferson College reliever Rob Wort (pictured left)  who finished off the game with zeros giving the Huskies offense a chance.

The Huskies offense, however, was only able to muster one run when in the bottom of the seventh inning Steve Chatwood (pictured right), from the Unviersity of San Diego, ripped a double and was driven home on a single by University of Arkansas infielder Collin Kuhn bringing the score to 3-1 in favor of the MoonDogs.

The Huskies and MoonDogs will face off again on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 PM on "Remember the Dukes Night" when we will take a look back at the storied history of baseball in Duluth and pay tribute to the tragic bus crash of the 1948 Duluth Dukes that killed five team members and injured scores more.  The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a "Pioneers of the Wade" poster from Stewart-Taylor Printing and ImageTech.  The posters will chronicle the people who were significantly impacted by Duluth baseball and advanced all the way to the Major Leagues.  Gates open at 3:05 PM.

Duluth will send Grant Muncrief, from Wichita State University to the mound for his first start of the year on Sunday.

By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies wrapped up their four game, cross-country, road trip on Friday night in Battle Creek, Michigan with the second game of a two-game series against the Battle Creek Bombers.  The host Bombers defeated the Huskies by the score of 5-3 in Duluth's first ever appearance in the state of Michigan, but the visiting Huskies bounced back in the second game battling back and scoring the winning run in the top of the ninth inning for a hard fought 7-6 win, making the bus trip back to Duluth that much more bearable.

The Huskies sent University of Minnesota-Duluth pitcher Joshua Foreman (pictured left) to the mound in his first ever appearance for the Huskies and Foreman overcame some early Northwoods League jitters and settled in keeping the Huskies in the game.  The Bombers were able to push across two first inning runs against Foreman before the Huskies tied it up in the top of the third with two runs of their own.  Duluth would then take the lead by the score of 3-2 with a run in the top of the fourth before the Bombers came back to tie it with a run in the bottom of that frame.  That just meant it was time for the Huskies to bite back, and they did with two more runs in the top of the fifth bring the score to 5-3 in favor of Duluth.  The Bombers were able to scratch back one more run in the bottom of the seventh, a run credited to Foreman who had started the inning, bringing Foreman's final line for his first Northwoods League action to six innings pitcher allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits while walking four and striking out two.

Foreman was then relieved by do-everything All-Star Tim Jobe who worked out of the seventh inning jam without allowing any more runs.  Jobe worked one inning scoreless inning allowing one hit while striking out three.  The Huskies tacked on another run in the top of the eighth giving themselves a 6-4 lead, but the Bombers struck back in the bottom with two runs off of relief pitcher Mitch Mormann who allowed a two-run home run that tied the game at six heading into the ninth.  That just meant the Huskies would have to pull one more trick out of their hat, and they did just that pushing across another run in the ninth bringing the score to 7-6 in favor of the good guys before Mormann worked a scoreless ninth for his second win of the season.  For the game Mormann worked two innings allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits while walking one and stiking out two.

The Huskies bats on this night were paced by Long Beach State product Taylor Krick (pictured right) who had three hits, two RBIs, and scored two runs during his first start at first base.  Another state of California product, Steve Chatwood, from the University of San Diego, added two hits, one RBI and scored one run while All-Star outfielder Chris House had two hits and scored two runs and third baseman Collin Kuhn went 2 for 2 with a run scored.  High School shortstop Andy Burns, who will be attending the University of Kentucky this fall also added two hits and a RBI to the Huskies winning cause.

The Huskies will now head back to Duluth to start a two game series against the North Division's First Half Champion Mankato MoonDogs on Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday will bring the second annual "Strike Out Breast Cancer and Ladies Night" event presented by the Duluth Clinic Breast Center and MIX 108.  The first 500 ladies in attendance will receive a pink visor plus the first 108 will receive a carnation courtesy of Sam's Florist and MIX 108.  Also, the Huskies special pink trimmed jerseys will be auctioned off during the game with the proceeds going to the Duluth Clinic Breast Center and the Young Survivors Coalition.  Following the game the ladies 18 years of age and older will be invited onto the field for a Diamond Dig presented by Nummi Jewelers and MIX 108 when one lucky lady will uncover a set of diamond earrings buried somewhere in the infield dirt.  Gates open Saturday at 6:05 PM.

Duluth will send University of Kansas starting pitcher T.J. Walz to the mound who is currently second in the Northwoods League in strikeouts with 61 on the season.

Battle Creek Drops Huskies

July 24, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies made their first ever excursion into the state of Michigan as they made the trip to Battle Creek for a pair of games on Thursday and Friday nights.  On Thursday, Duluth sent starting pitcher Matt Hauser (pictured left) to the mound looking to keep the momentum going from a big win over Waterloo on Wednesday, unfortunately for Hauser and the Huskies Battle Creek jumped ahead early and never relinquished the lead handing Duluth a 5-3 loss.

The Bombers got to Hauser early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Hauser did settle down nicely, but it would be too late as the Huskies offense was not able to fight out of the hole.  For the game Hauser worked six inning allowing five runs, four of them earned, on nine hits while walking four and striking out four.  He was relieved by Rob Wort who worked the final two innings without allowing a hit or a run while walking one and striking out five.

At the plate the Huskies offense was paced by 2008 Northwoods League All-Star Tim Jobe (pictured right) who went 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored while fellow All-Star Chris House, who was designated hitter on this night, added two hits and a run scored.

The Huskies will take on the Bombers once again on Friday night before heading back to Duluth to start a two game series against the North Division's First Half Champion Mankato MoonDogs on Saturday and Sunday. Following the game the ladies will be invited onto the field for a Diamond Dig presented by Nummi Jewelers and MIX 108 when one lucky lady will uncover a set of diamond earrings buried somewhere in the infield dirt.  Gates open Saturday at 6:05 PM.

Late Inning Rally Means Huskies Win

July 23, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies faced off against the Waterloo Bucks for the second of a two-game set in Waterloo, Iowa on Wednesday night just one day after dropping a tough 2-1 game on a bases loaded walk late in the game.  On this night, however, it would be Duluth that would mount the late inning rally scoring two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings giving the Huskies a 5-1 victory.

Tim Statz (pictured left) got the start on the mound for Duluth and picked up his third win of the season after working seven very strong innings allowing only one run on five hits while walking one and striking out six.  Statz was relieved by Northwoods League All-Star designated hitter Tim Jobe who worked a scoreless inning of relief on the mound allowing only two hits and striking out two before passing the baton to the ultimate ninth inning man, Mitch Mormann who sealed the deal on the Huskies win with a scoreless inning without allowing a hit while walking one and striking out one.

The Huskies offense was led by catcher Steve Chatwood (pictured right) who was 2 for 2 with three RBIs while Jobe was 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored.  Right fielder Ty Main also added a hit, a RBI and scored a run while shortstop Andy Burns had a hit and scored a run for the Duluth cause.

The Huskies will now move on to Battle Creek, Michigan for their first ever appearance in the state of Michigan as they face off against the Battle Creek Bombers on Thursday and Friday night before coming back to Duluth on Saturday, July 26th for "Strike Out Breast Cancer Night and Ladies Night Diamond Dig" presented by the Duluth Clinic Breast Center and MIX 108.  Duluth will send starting pitcher Matt Hauser to the mound in Battle Creek on Thursday.

Huskies Drop One Late in Waterloo

July 22, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies made the trip down to Waterloo, Iowa on Tuesday to start a two game set against the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League's South Division.  The Huskies enter the series following a split in two games against the Rochester Honkers.  The Huskies looked to pitcher Andy Hamilton (pictured left), from Rice University to get the road trip started on the right foot and Hamilton did his job after being forced into a spot start keeping the Bucks off the scoreboard for the first three innings of the game allowing only two hits and walking three while striking out three.

The Huskies then were able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning before Waterloo tied the game again at 1-1 with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth off of relief pitcher Sam Murphy, unfortunately for Duluth this would be as close as they would get this night.  Murphy worked 2 2/3 innings allowing only that one run on three hits while walking two and striking out five.  Murphy then gave way to Evan Cox who worked the final 2 1/3 innings eventually allowing the game winning run to Waterloo on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Cox allowed just the one run on two hits while walking two and striking out one.

The Huskies offense mustered only four hits in this game, but were paced by right fielder Ty Main (picture right) who went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Duluth and Waterloo will face off again on Wednesday night in Waterloo before the Huskies move on to Battle Creek, Michigan for their first ever appearance in the state of Michigan as they face off against the Battle Creek Bombers on Thursday and Friday night before coming back to Duluth on Saturday, July 26th for "Strike Out Breast Cancer Night and Ladies Night Diamond Dig" presented by the Duluth Clinic Breast Center and MIX 108.

Honkers Shutout Duluth

July 21, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies and starting pitcher Matt Benedict (pictured left) took to the field on Monday night against the Rochester Honkers less than 24 hours after they shutout the Honkers by the score of 6-0 on Sunday.  Unfortunately for Benedict and the Huskies it was the Honkers turn to return the favor as they defeated the Huskies by the score of 4-0.

Benedict, from the University of Western Carolina, threw well for the first 5 1/3 innings keeping the Huskies in the game by only allowing two runs on one hit while walking seven and striking three.  Benedict was then relieved by Grant Muncrief, from Wichita State University, who worked the final 2 2/3 innings allowing two more Rochester runs bringing the final score to 4-0.

The Huskies bats were kept off balance most of the night by Rochester's starting pitcher, Peter Burg, from The College of St. Scholastica, who threw a complete game shutout handing Benedict his first loss of the 2008 season.

The Huskies will now take their show on the road as they travel to Waterloo, Iowa for a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday night before moving east to Battle Creek, Michigan for two more on Thursday and Friday before coming back to Duluth on Saturday, July 26th for "Strike Out Breast Cancer Night and Ladies Night Diamond Dig" presented by the Duluth Clinic Breast Center and MIX 108.

Huskies Shutout Rochester

July 20, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies took on North Division rival, the Rochester Honkers, in a Sunday 4:05 PM afternoon match-up on a beautiful sunny day at Wade Stadium in West Duluth as Cost Cutters Family Hair Salons presented Cost Cutters Baseball Hat Giveaway as the first 500 fans through the gates received a baseball cap courtesy of Cost Cutters.  The Huskies made every fan who made it down to the Wade left happy as they broke open a scoreless game in the eighth inning with six runs leading up to a 6-0 win for Duluth.

Starting pitcher TJ Walz (pictured left) was the biggest story as he worked into the seventh inning against the Honkers throwing up zero after zero on the scoreboard and striking out 12 Rochester batters.  Relief pitcher Evan Cox worked the rest of the seventh and the eighth to earn the win before giving way to Huskies closer Mitch Mormann who threw a perfect ninth inning closing the book on the Huskies win.

The Huskies offense had been held to only one hit entering the eighth inning before Ty Main started the inning with a leadoff single starting the merry-go-round of Huskies runners as Chris House and Robby Price then each followed with singles loading the bases.  Main then scored on a wild pitch giving the Huskies the lead before RBI singles by Tim Jobe (pictured right) and Andy Burns extended the Huskies lead to 6-0 providing more than enough cushion for the strong right arm of Mormann.

The Huskies will host the Honkers again on Monday night at Wade Stadium as RBC Wealth Management presents Batting Helmet Night when the first 500 kids 12 and under will receive a free Duluth Huskies batting helmet courtesy of RBC Wealth Management.  On the field, the Huskies will look to move further up the North Division standings as they will send starting pitcher Matt Benedict to the mound.  Gates open on Monday at 6:05 PM.

Errors Lead to Huskies Loss

July 18, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies returned to Wade Stadium for the first time in nearly a week when the Brainerd Blue Thunder made the trip to Duluth for a two game series set for Friday and Saturday night.  Friday brought a great crowd of 3,405 fans to the Wade on Superior Night featuring nationally known mascot act Rally presented by the Superior Jaycee's, unfortunately for the host Huskies and the many fans, tough errors and the lack of the big hit led to a Huskies loss by the score of 8-0.

The Huskies sent new starting pitcher Matt Hauser, who will be attending the University of San Diego in the fall, to the mound for his first start of the season and he worked well after a shaky first inning and went on to set down 14 straight Blue Thunder batters.  Unfortunately unearned runs created a hole that was too much for the Huskies batters to get out of.

The Huskies hitters were led by outfielder Ty Main (pictured left) who had two hits and reached on a walk.  Overall the offense actually outhit the Blue Thunder eight to seven but the four Huskies errors and strong Brainerd pitching led to the third straight Huskies loss to Brainerd.

These same two teams will face off against each other again on Saturday when T.J. Walz (pictured right) from the University of Kansas will make the start on the mound on Mini Bat Night presented by Minnesota Forest Industries and Minnesota Timber Producers as the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free Duluth Huskies mini bat courtesy of the Minnesota Forest Industries and Minnesota Timber Producers.  Gates will open at 6:05 PM on Saturday.

The Huskies homestand will continue on Sunday for a 4:05 PM game when Cost Cutters Family Hair Salons will presents Cost Cutters Baseball Hat Giveaway when the first 500 fans through the gates will receive a free baseball hat from Cost Cutters.  Gates open on Sunday at 3:05 PM.

Blue Thunder Rolls Over Duluth

July 18, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies faced off against the Brainerd Blue Thunder for the second of two games scheduled to be played in Brainerd before both teams make the trip to Duluth for two more game on Friday and Saturday night at the Wade.

Following a tough 6-4 loss at the hands of Brainerd on Wednesday the Huskies were hoping for better luck on Thursday, unfortunately things actually turned even more sour as Brainerd jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first and built from there eventually defeating Duluth by the score of 10-2.

The Huskies sent starting pitcher Tim Statz (2-1) to the mound for the start and Statz allowed three runs, only two of them earned, on seven hits while walking two and striking out three en route to picking up his first loss of the season.  Sam Murphy worked the sixth inning allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits while walking three before Andy Hamilton worked the seventh surrendering four runs, all earned on five hits while walking one.  Robby Price (pictured left) made his debut on the mound in 2008 working a scoreless eighth inning without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one.

At the plate the Huskies were led by 2008 Northwoods League All-Star Chris House who went four for five with a run scored from the leadoff spot.  Third baseman Andy Burns also added two hits to the Huskies cause.  Price and catcher Moises Montero had the two RBIs for Duluth.

The Huskies and Blue Thunder will now travel to Duluth for two games on Friday and Saturday night at beautiful Wade Stadium in sunny West Duluth, Minnesota.  On both days the gates open at 6:05 PM.  On Friday, the Huskies will welcome nationally known mascot act Rally on Superior Night, presented by the Superior Jaycee's!  Saturday will be Mini Bat Night presented by the Minnesota Forest Industries and Minnesota Timber Producers.

Brainerd Gets Past Duluth

The Huskies fell behind in the first on a wild pitch and were not able to climb back on top of the Blue Thunder eventually losing by the score of 6-4.

Rain Leads to Huskies Loss

July 11, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies made the trip down to Mankato, Minnesota on Friday night to start a two-game series against the First Half North Division Champion Mankato MoonDogs.  The Huskies were greeted by temperatures in the 90's but they would soon learn how quickly the weather can change in Minnesota as the game with the MoonDogs was cut short after only six innings played, giving Mankato the 7-3 win.

Duluth sent University of Nebraska starting pitcher Mike Nesseth (pictured left)to the mound looking to get back on the winning track after being swept by the the hottest team in the Northwoods League, the St. Cloud River Bats.  Nesseth was greeted by some hot swinging MoonDog bats who touched him for five runs on eight hits while walking one and not striking out a single batter in four innings of work.  Nesseth was then relieved by Grant Muncrief who worked the next two innings allowing two more Mankato runs on two hits while walking three and striking out three.

The Huskies offense was able to battle back after falling behind early scoring a run in the top of the third and two more in the top of the sixth, but that's when the storm front ran through Mankato pounding the field with rain and hail making the field unplayable.  Unfortunately for Duluth, the game had reached the point of becoming a complete game meaning a win for Mankato.

The Huskies and Mankato will face off again on Saturday night starting at 7:05 PM in the second game of the two-game series and the last game before the Northwoods League's three day All-Star break highlighted by the All-Star Game taking place on Monday, July 14th in Madison, Wisconsin.  The Huskies will send starting pitcher Matt Benedict looking to send Duluth into the break on a winning note.

Huskies Fall Short Against River Bats

July 10, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies wrapped up their season long eight game homestand at Wade Stadium on Thursday night facing the North Division leading St. Cloud River Bats in the second game of the scheduled two game series.  After some light rain showers early in the day the sun broke through the clouds late in the afternoon leaving no doubt that there would be baseball played, unfortunately for Duluth the Huskies bats weren't able to break through like the sun against the River Bats.

Duluth sent starting pitcher Aaron Barrett (pictured left), a 2008 draftee of the Minnesota Twins, to the mound for the start and he did not have his best stuff early as St. Cloud was able to jump head to a lead and despite settling down in the mid-innings and keeping the River Bats within striking distance it proved to be too deep of a hole as the Huskies fell by the score of 7-4.

The Huskies offense knocked out 10 hits in the game, led by designated hitter Tim Jobe (pictured right) who went three for three with two singles and a RBI double.  Jobe is one of two Huskies who have been selected to play in the 2008 Northwoods League All-Star Game which will be played on Monday, July 14th in Madison, Wisconsin, joined by outfielder Chris House.

The Huskies will now travel to Mankato to take on the First Half North Division Champion Mankato MoonDogs in a two-game series before heading into the All-Star break.  On Friday Duluth will send University of Nebraska pitcher Mike Nesseth to the mound looking to bring the Huskies back on the winning track.  Both games in Mankato are scheduled to start at 7:05 PM.

River Bats Silence the Huskies

July 9, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies welcomed the first place St. Cloud River Bats to historic Wade Stadium in Duluth on an Arby's Roast Beef Wednesday as both teams entered the series hot as St. Cloud was 9-1 in their last 10 games and Duluth was 7-3 in the same span.

Josh Godfrey (pictured left) got the start for Duluth and threw the ball great allowing only a single run in the third inning on a wild pitch.  After that it was all St. Cloud pitching as the River Bats silenced the Huskies bats by completing the shutout and allowing only two hits for Duluth, one off the bat of Collin Kuhn and one from first baseman Thomas NicholsChris House, who was named to the All-Star team on Wednesday, reached base three times walking twice and reaching on an error.

The Huskies and River Bats will be back at it again on Thursday at the Wade starting at 7:05 PM as the Huskies Aaron Barrett will head to the mound for the start.  Wednesday will also mark Famous Dave's Backyard BBQ Night as Famous Dave's will take over the Kennel Klub Sports Deck menu all night long with only the most mouthwatering BBQ in town.  Gates open at 6:05 PM.

Huskies Notable Notes
 - With the Huskies retiring the number 5 on Tuesday night in honor of Joey Bonadonna, who played for seasons in Duluth and still holds seven Duluth Huskies career records, only two players will have worn that number for Duluth.  Bonadonna and infielder Dale Legaspi from the University of Southern California, who wore number 5 during the Huskies 2003 and 2004 seasons the teams first two in existence, are the only players to have worn the number.

How Sweep it is!

July 8, 2008
By Topher Davis, Duluth Huskies

The Duluth Huskies and the Madison Mallards faced off again on Tuesday night at historic Wade Stadium in Duluth in the second game of the scheduled two game series after the Huskies have taken the first three games of the season series and before the game the Huskies honored former Duluth Huskies star and four year player Joey Bonadonna, who now plays for the Mallards of the South Division, as Duluth retired the #5 which was worn by Bonadonna during his entire time in Duluth.  Unfortunately for Bonadonna's new team, Madison, Duluth has had their number here in 2008 and it continued again on Tuesday as Duluth swept the season series with a 3-0 win.

The story of the game turned out to be the Duluth Huskies pitching staff who had five pitchers combine in the shutout.  It all started with starting pitcher T.J. Walz (pictured left) who worked the first five innings, absolutely dominated the Mallards bats, and earned his first win of the season running his record to 1-3.  Walz gave way to Andy Hamilton who walked two batters before Sam Murphy from the University of Arkansas came in and got out of a tough bases loaded, no outs jam in the sixth inning.  Murphy later passed the shutout baton to Evan Cox, also from the University of Arkansas, who continued keeping Madison off the scorebooks before Mitch Mormann came in to pitch the ninth inning, slamming the door shut and sealing the Huskies win by getting Joey Bonadonna to ground into a fielders choice for the final out of the game.

The Huskies offense made the most of its opportunities on this night pushing across three runs on nine hits, two off the bat of Robby Price and RBI singles from both Todd Baumgartner (pictured right) and Moises Montero, who picked up his first RBI of the season.

The Huskies will continue their home stand on Wednesday night on another Arby's Roast Beef Wednesday when the St. Cloud River Bats come to the Wade for their first trip to Duluth in the 2008 season.  Gates will open at 6:05 PM as the first 500 fans through the gates will receive a coupon for a buy one, get one free Roast Beef Sandwich from Arby's in Duluth.
